What is Inbound Marketing?

Posted by | Main | No Comments

Inbound marketing is all about getting found by customers looking for what you have to offer, rather than paying for potential customers attention through advertising, or trying to demand their attention through unsolicited sales methods like telemarketing, door to door etc.

Inbound marketing is extremely effective because it is permission based, not interruption based. Meaning the people you are talking to through inbound marketing are listening because they want to, not because they have been forced to. This type of engagement leads to higher conversion rates, better customer retention and more engaged customers.

Sounds great doesn’t it?

So how do I do Inbound Marketing?

The internet has really made inbound marketing a viable option for businesses of all sizes. But if you are good at what you do, your business will likely be harnessing one of the fundamental inbound marketing tools already: word of mouth.

If your in business it’s hard to ignore the power of personal recommendations. Inbound marketing can help to scale this up using social media and creating quality content that people want to share. This type of engagement with potential customers builds trust and loyalty.

Another great tool for inbound marketing is SEO or search engine optimisation. These days most consumers perform searches on products and services before making buying decisions, I know I do.  Whether its looking at restaurant reviews, finding  good deals on consumer goods or even trying to find a new dentist many people will turn to search as their first option. By maintaining high rankings in search results you can capture these customers who are actively looking for what you offer.

Of course for all of this to work you need a website to send your customers to, and it should be a good one. You want your site to be attractive and easy to use. You need to make it clear what you want your customers to do when they get there, and make it easy for them to do it. By analyzing  the behavior of visitors on your site it is possible further increase the returns on your Inbound Marketing strategy. This is called CRO, or conversion rate optimisation.

What is SEO?

[pullquote pullright] Search engine optimisation is the process of making small changes to a website and it’s online presence in order to place it as highly in certain search results as possible. [/pullquote] If you’re a business owner, you’ve probably received a number of emails trying to sell you the typical “we can get you onto the #1 page of Google!” SEO services. It can sound appealing, and SEO truly is beneficial when it’s done right – but what is SEO exactly?

SEO stands for “search engine optimisation”. Search engine optimisation is the process of making small changes to a website and it’s online presence in order to place it as highly in certain search results as possible. For example, if you are a plumber in Sydney, you’ll want your business’ website to show up as the #1 result for the search term (also called a keyword) “Plumber Sydney” or “Plumbers in Sydney”, right? If it’s one of your competitors in that #1 spot, then you are losing customers to them.

In a Nutshell: How SEO Works

When you search for something on Google or a similar search engine, you will typically start with a page containing the top 10 results. The websites in these top 10 results are the ones out of the total search results that have the most and highest quality backlinks. Backlinks are a huge part of SEO; a backlink is where a website is linked to by another website. The more a website is linked to, the higher it tends to rank in the search results. This is what’s known as off-site SEO, as backlinking does not require your website to be edited.

However, backlinks aren’t all that matter. For your website to even show up in search results for a certain search term, your website’s content has to contain that search term, along with other relative words and phrases. Your website also has to be easy for search engines to read and navigate. An SEO company will usually optimise your structure and content for you before building backlinks, which then gets you on your way to successful search engine rankings. That is search engine optimisation in a nutshell.

 Unethical SEO and its Risks

Search engine optimisation, unfortunately, can be abused. There are unethical techniques such as overloading your website with keywords (referred to as “keyword stuffing”), and building masses of spam backlinks in a short period of time, which may temporarily boost your ranking – but at a high risk. Any website applying unethical SEO techniques is breaking search engine regulations and providing a negative user experience, and it can lead to you being penalised in search results. Make sure any SEO company you work with is legit!

Ethical SEO and its Benefits

It’s important to remember that true SEO is more about quality than quantity. You’ll want to be getting backlinks from long-standing, authoritative websites, and have the backlinks built up over time in a natural manner. There is a saying that goes “content is king”. Google loves quality. Your content should be high-quality, relevant, and should not contain the same keywords repeated unnaturally.
